Medicare Questions We Hear Every Day

Ideally in the three months before the month you turn 65. Your Initial Enrollment Period lasts seven months: the three months before the month you turn 65, your birthday month, and the three months after. Enrolling early in that window avoids gaps in coverage and late penalties. If you’re still working and covered by an employer plan (20 or more employees), you may be able to delay Part B without penalty — we can walk through your situation for free. See our Turning 65 Medicare checklist and Do I need Part B if I’m still working?

The main difference is networks versus freedom of choice. Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans bundle Parts A and B, usually include drug coverage, and often add dental, vision or hearing extras, but use provider networks. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare to cover deductibles and coinsurance, lets you see any provider that accepts Medicare, and is paired with a separate Part D drug plan. The right choice depends on your doctors, prescriptions, travel and budget. See our full Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement comparison.

A low-cost Part D plan protects you from that penalty and from unexpected prescription costs later. Here’s how the Part D late-enrollment penalty works.

Each fall, during the Annual Enrollment Period, October 15 – December 7, with changes effective January 1. Outside that window, Special Enrollment Periods apply when you move, lose coverage or have certain other life events.

No. Our guidance, plan comparisons and enrollment help are free to you. Licensed agents are compensated by the insurance carriers, and your premium is the same whether you enroll through us or directly. See also where to get free Medicare help in Greenville.
