ACA Marketplace Plans, Explained

Marketplace plans are sold through HealthCare.gov, the exchange South Carolina uses. Here’s what matters most when you compare them. For 2027 dates and changes, see our 2027 ACA Open Enrollment guide.

Metal levels

Bronze, Silver and Gold plans trade a lower premium for higher costs when you use care, or the other way around. All of them cover the same essential health benefits.

Premium tax credits

Based on your household income and size, the credit lowers your monthly premium right away. For 2027, it’s available to households at or below 400% of the federal poverty level (about $63,840 for one person, $132,000 for four).

Extra savings on Silver plans

Lower-income households can get reduced deductibles and copays, but only on a Silver plan.

Pre-existing conditions are covered

ACA plans can’t turn you down or charge you more because of your health history.

Off-Marketplace options

We’ll also compare private plans and short-term coverage when they make sense, and explain what they don’t cover.

Health Insurance Questions We Hear Every Day

Open Enrollment for 2027 Marketplace (HealthCare.gov) plans runs November 1, 2026 – January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1; if you enroll December 16 – January 15, coverage starts February 1. Outside that window, a qualifying life event such as losing job-based coverage, moving, getting married or having a baby opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period. For the subsidy cliff and what’s changing, see our 2027 ACA Open Enrollment guide.

Yes, if your household income is at or below 400% of the federal poverty level (about $63,840 for one person or $132,000 for a family of four for 2027 coverage). The extra credits that went above that line ended after 2025. We’ll estimate your credit before you pick a plan so there are no surprises.

Yes. They’re the same plans, sold through HealthCare.gov, which is the Marketplace South Carolina uses. Poston Health can enroll you in them directly.

Often, yes, but networks differ plan by plan. Tell us your doctors and your hospital system (for example Prisma Health or Bon Secours St. Francis), and we’ll only show you plans that include them.

Self-employed professionals can buy Marketplace plans (often with tax credits), or private plans outside the Marketplace. We compare both, check that your doctors and prescriptions are covered, and handle the enrollment paperwork.

An HMO uses a defined network and usually requires a primary care physician and referrals, in exchange for lower premiums. A PPO gives more flexibility to see out-of-network providers without referrals, generally at a higher premium. We’ll show you which local hospitals and physicians are in each network.

No. Our comparisons and enrollment help are free — the carrier pays us, and your premium is identical whether you enroll through Poston Health or on your own.

Your ZIP code, the birth dates of everyone who needs coverage, an estimate of your household income for the year, and the names of any doctors or prescriptions you want to keep. With that we can usually show you side-by-side options the same day.
